The Veteran Artist Program is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to providing a weekly podcast which interviews creative veterans. Over the 5 years the organization has existed, host BR McDonald has interviewed hundreds of veterans including Jason Everman, John Lee Dumas, and Warwick Young.
McDonald, an Army veteran himself, served as a linguist and special operator for the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command. McDonald learned Arabic through his military service, and gave up pursuing his dreams in theater after earning a vocal performance degree from the University of North Carolina. Soon after leaving active duty, he started The Veteran Artist Program to the fulfill creativity that he felt was dormant in his life.
Additionally, the podcast supplements VAP’s consultation and assistance to creative veterans in growing their artistic works. VAP has created a network of over 1,700 veteran creatives through Facebook. Artists, musicians, writers, and other creatives collaborate and share their work through the non-profit’s group page.
